Service: Capsat - Information from satellite images for a better agricultural policy in Flanders and Europe

Responsible organisation: Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (Central-Government)

Every Flemish farmer who receives 'direct support' within the European Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is obliged to adhere to a number of climate and environmentally friendly principles and practices with a view to sustainable, liveable and competitive agriculture. This concerns, for example, crop diversification, the maintenance of grassland and the creation of ecological focus areas. The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries supervises the correct and timely implementation of these types of policy measures. Currently, the control is based on spot checks in the field. High-resolution images from various satellites are able to quickly map the correct information. This allows for better follow-up, guidance and control of the farmers. Also possibly. crop damage due to drought or flooding can be objectified more quickly. The project was entitled CAPSAT: CAP stands for 'Common Agricultural Policy' and SAT for 'satellite'.
